MPNAIJA GIST:Maleek Berry Afro-pop producer, singer wants to colonise the world with African sound

The multi-skilled producer refuses to be boxed in with one sound, priding himself in his ability to make all types of music.
He tells Rehab TV he knew he wanted to do music big time when watching pop legend Michael Jackson perform as a child. play

As a producer in London, he talks about getting ahead, having to adapt to the culture, gathering support from many people. On whether he would describe himself as an Afrobeat producer, the multi-talented musician states that he doesn’t consider himself one. “I call myself a producer, songwriter, and I make all types of music,” adding that his aim is to colonise the world with African sound.
He recounts breaking into the industry by meeting Davido through a cousin of the ‘Aye’ singer who in turn introduced him to Wizkid and the rest was history.
On becoming an artist, Maleek said he felt it was time to create a new challenge. “ I wanted to try something new and challenge myself and be one of the people that takes Nigerian music to the world,” though admitting that Nigerians particularly don’t like change so much.
The ace hitmaker also lends his opinion on what makes a good record, need for him getting signed to a record label, songwriting and royalties collection in the industry.
